The Christmedley

I have to give you a little background on this story. On the morning of November 20, 1993, I was awoken at 3:30 am out of a sound sleep to music going through my mind. Christmas music. Repeatedly. It wouldn't stop until I had written it down in a crude manner so I could go back to sleep. At the time, my name was Dawn Sells, I was working in banking full time in order to pay my way through college for my business degree. It would be 4 years before I would meet Decker.

This music is not original, and this recording I have made is not perfect, nor does it include all of the orchestration I heard all those years ago. But, technology has finally allowed me to get a version of it recorded to share with the world. By technology, I mean a keyboard and a Mac. All of the instruments are electronic, and the recording was made on Garageband.

It was performed once, in 1993, for a Christmas talent show in the singles Ward I was in at the time. That was, shall we say, memorable. I had re-arranged the song as a duet for piano and violin. Because of how I had written the music for the violin, it required several pages. I'll scan the music in a subsequent post here and you can see for yourself. The girl who was very kind in playing the violin, taped 4 pages together at a time and layered them so she could read the music as quickly as I was playing it on the piano. Since she didn't get someone to pull the sheets from her stand for her, she took each 4 page layer and pulled it off, throwing it on the floor. As a result, everyone in the audience liked the music, but thought it was a comedy routine, not a serious performance of a piece that had come from the inspiration of God. I was hurt by that and never performed it again, until now as I've recorded it.

It's taken 3 days to get this right, and I think I've finally gotten most of it.

I hope everyone out there who hears this enjoys it, and passes it along. As the music for this is in the public domain, I'm keeping the performance in the public domain as well.

The list of songs:

Silent Night
Hark! The Herald Angels Sing
For Unto Us - Handel's Messiah
Gloria - Vivaldi
Angels We Have Heard On High

Happy Holidays!

  1. Absolutely positively gorgeous Dawn. Definitely as you say--God inspired. You MUST find a way to perform it LIVE again. You have to share it with everyone.

  2. I think it would be fun to perform it again, I don't know how, but I think it would be fun. In the meantime, I can at least share it through this blog.

    Thanks!
